Privilege News July 2015

Dear Members,

We trust this month’s newsletter finds you in the Best of Health. We say so out of real care and concern because we are now in the middle of the rainy season having began in the middle of May and will be with us to the very end of October. Tropical rains are relatively unpredictable and a downpour can come in any time of the day. It can last just minutes or linger on for hours. Seasoned veterans to the Kingdom will know that an umbrella can be your best companion when you venture into the outdoors which still has a lot to offer. A sniffle or a slight cough may be signaling the onset of a virus infection if your body is weak. Did you know that many of the fresh herbs and spices used in Thai cooking such as turmeric, galangal, coriander, lemongrass, and fresh chillies have immune-boosting and disease-fighting power? In this issue we will tell you more on the amazing healing powers of Thai cuisine as well as other ways to stay in tip-top shape. Let us know how you feel about Thai food. Share with us what you like about our cuisine or give us any feedback you want. But above all, do enjoy this month’s issue.

Yam Sai Fon

which literally translates into Spicy Raindrop Salad is so suitable for this rainy season. The recipe having been passed down through many generations from mothers to daughters consists of only fresh ingredients such as pomelo, chilies, garlic, prawns, coriander, coconut and other exotic herbs all lightly mixed together. Not only is it a good weight-reducing dish because of its super low calorie count but the different ingredients each have their own health benefit. Pomelo is good for blood circulation, has high calcium and also provides vitamin c, a much-needed defense for colds. Lemon grass is great for many gastro-intestinal ailments while the capsicum in chilies are an added source of antioxidants good for the eyesight and boosts our immune system. Developed by the early Thais as an integral part of the art of Thai Massage, the herbal ball is seldom heard of and rarely seen.  Applied to the body by expert masseuse it induces deep relaxation, relieves stress and fatigue, boosts both the emotional and physical well-being, assists in the alignment and postural integrity of the body, improves circulation of blood and lymph nodes and even stimulates the internal organs. Ingredients may vary depending on what is ailing you, however, the most common include kaffir leaves, sweet sage, basil leaves, lemon grass, tamarind leaves, cumin, camphor and menthol. Just by reading this list you are already drifting into a relaxed state of mind, yes? All of these herbs have their own benefits and will certainly make you feel at ease and cure your sore muscles.
